Day 55 ( 27th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 55

Well, the weather is looking a bit okay to do some more work on 'Jane-May' so we got out as soon as we could to get some more done. The weather didn't brighten up until the afternoon, so we were late in getting started.

We still have to fix the drivers (right) side wing in place properly, and the front panel needs to go on. We also need to get the passengers (left) side door on and the passengers (left) side wing in place.

So that is what we did.

We have to bonnet (hood) on, but it is not properly fixed in place. But you get the idea of how much we have done and how she is looking now. Paul also got the pods in place for the front lights. We had to wait for more parts to come, again. But we have all the wiring for her now and the long awaited registration plates. They look really cool. With her being a classic vehicle, we are able to have the old Black and Silver Plates. I have taken the picture from the internet to show you what they are like. This is not the reg that 'Jane-May' has. I am not telling you what that is LOL.

Now don't you think that looks just fantastic. I cant wait to get them on 'Jane-May'.

Anyway, the last thing that we managed to get on was the tailgate. Now most of the body work is on. The only thing she is missing is the floor and the seat box. We are not putting them in yet. Paul wants to check the clutch is working okay before the floor and seat box goes in. He doesn't want to have to take it all out again if we have to replace the clutch plate.

Here is a couple of pictures of the rear of 'Jane-May' with her tailgate on.

Paul made sure the canvas was on properly as we are in for a storm. We don't want anything to happen to the canvas with the winds that are expected. They say we could have winds up to 90mph. So it is a good thing we have the main body work on now. That way nothing would get blown around the garden. That is the last thing I want. All that hard work that has been put into 'Jane-May' with the painting and everything else. Lets hope the storm misses us and we will not have any of the winds or the rain they have forecast.

Not long now I think, before we are taking 'Jane-May' for her MOT. I am really getting excited now.

Speak to you all soon. Pray the storm misses us.
Debbie

Day 54 ( 24th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 54

Well the sun was shinning beautifully today and we got loads of work done to 'Jane-May'. She is really taking shape now and even looks like a Series 2 Land Rover LOL.

This is what we got done today.

We fixed all the hood sticks in place for the canvas roof.

As you can also see from the photos we got the drivers (right) side door fitted. The door was a bit of a pain to get fitted and it had to have a bit of jigging to get it to close properly. But we got there in the end. I think everything is starting to come together nicely now. The is a little bracket that goes between the top corner of the windscreen and the side panel just above the door. Well, the bracket that was on 'Jane-May' was the wrong one. There's a surprise, not. So now we have to make a bracket that will fit. This one doesn't do anything like it should do, so it is going to have to be made. I think Paul and Christopher are getting used to having to make stuff for the car LOL.

Anyway, here is a better photo showing the drivers (right) door. Really taking shape.

You can see that Paul is fixing the bulkhead back after having to move it a little to get the door to close.

It is amazing how much time fitting the door could take up. But at least it is fitted now and the canvas roof can go on

We had a bit of a pain putting the roof back on LOL. We had to have a look at a couple of pictures of canvas roofed Series 2's to remember how the roof went back on. It has been a long time since the canvas was on LOL

But I do think she looks really good with the roof on now. But I will let you be the judge of that LOL

Now all she needs is a couple of wings and she will be nearly there. We were only able to get one wing on just before we lost all the light.

Unfortunately Paul got the tarpaulin on before I could get the photo taken. But I think you get the idea. It is dark now so we will not be able to get anything else done. So look to see what is next to be fitted on 'Jane-May'.

Day 53 ( 21st October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 53

Well I have just checked the bank today and the refund from '*addocks' has just gone it. That has taken a total of 2 weeks and 3 days to get the refund. We had been told by a couple of people that they drag it out when it comes to refunding money they owe you, but this ridiculous.

The weather has been awful today and we have not been able to get anything done. So lets hope the weather is better tomorrow. That is all I seem to say these days, hope it is better tomorrow.

Anyway, I thought I would remind you were we are up to. So here is a picture again of the tub and the windscreen on my lovely 'Jane-May'.

Watch this space to see how everything is going. Don't forget, you can comment on the each of the posts in the blog and I can let everyone know what you all think of the restoration.

Debbie (getting very excited about everything again)

Day 51 and Day 52 ( 19th and 20th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 51

The pedals are in place and we noticed that we didn't paint the parts that hold the pedals in place. Well, we did have other things on our minds LOL. But they will be able to be painted while they are in place as the need to be done in the Brunswick Green. So that is not too hard to do.

The bits that haven't been painted really stand out don't they. But they will not stay like that for long LOL.

We also got the Master Cylinder on and the brakes have been bled. We put a brand new master cylinder on so the brakes should be really good now. Not like they were before the restoration. I used to call the braking system 'BE' braking. 'BE' stands for 'Brakes Eventually'. Not really what you want when you are driving a vehicle that weighs about 1.5 tons LOL. So now I will be able to stop without having to think about it a mile before hand LOL

The pedal box was painted black to give it a better look. It was really yucky looking before. Now it is all shiny. I like shiny stuff LOL

So lets recap. We now have all the brakes on and they have been bled. The master cylinder is on and the pedals are all in place. Now for the wheels. They have all been painted in cream (except for the spare wheel, that still needs to be done) so they are ready to go on. I think they do look fab in the cream and these photos show how good they look.

Drivers side (right) front wheel

Drivers side (right) rear wheel

Passengers side (left) rear wheel

Passengers side (left) front wheel

So that is what the wheels look like on my beautiful 'Jane-May'. It is making it all come together so well now. You can see the light at the end of the restoration LOL. We even painted the inside of the wheels in the cream

The cream on the inside of the wheel just finishes it off nicely. Now the rolling chassis is ready for the body to go on. This is the exciting bit. It will be so good to see the tub on the back of the car. Then we will see what all the hard work has been for. That will make it all worth while.

Day 52

The weather was threatening to rain again. We sat for ages watching the weather trying to work out if it was safe to try and get the tub on the chassis.

Well, the rain stayed off so we set to work getting the cars moved, that being my 110 defender 'Olli' and my mondeo 'Christine' moved. 'Olli' needed to be moved off the drive and 'Christine' had to be moved out the way of the gates. Then it was down to moving the caravan out to the front of the drive so we could get the tub brought thru to the front to go on the chassis.

Once everything had been moved, it took 4 of us to carry the tub from the back garden to the front where 'Jane-May' was waiting for the it. That was a job and a half. It needed 2 people at each end and with me and our sons girlfriend only being little, we needed the boys to help us. If not, it would have taken a long time for the lads to do it on their own. LOL

Well we did it. The tub is now on the chassis and she is starting to look like a proper car again. I had forgotten how high the tub is on the chassis. LOL We also got the windscreen on and it looks great. The glass needs a clean, but it has been sat waiting to be fitted for weeks. LOL

The tub on and the screen is going on

The screen was the sort of easy part to do. Well there wasn't any climbing over the chassis to get that on. I am surprised Christopher didn't fall off the chassis trying to get the tub on. But he is good at climbing LOL.

Here is the screen going on. Careful boys.

The head of the mallet is coming off and he was trying to think what he could hit it with to get it back on. He is only happy when he can hit stuff with a big mallet or hammer LOL.

Here is the screen on. I think I need to give the glass a good clean LOL

That is the tub and the screen on now. She is starting to look like a car again. But there is still loads of work to do before we can take her for the MOT.

But some of the lights can go on. Paul just had to put the new rear lights on to see how it looked. I think it looks great.

Rear Drivers side (right) stop and tail light plus indicator on

Rear Drivers side lights on with the number plate light

Well that is all and we are up to date now. So hopefully it will not be long before 'Jane-May' is going for the MOT. I will need you all to pray for her on that day. Just to make sure she passes. Mind you, I don't think she will fail, there has been so much work that has gone into this restoration she shouldn't fail.

I will let you know how everything else goes. The weather today (21/10/13) has not been good and it has rained most of the day. So another day that nothing has been done. We have to go and get some more bolts tomorrow so that we can secure the tub and a few other things that need to be fixed down. So hopefully we will get some more done then. Our youngest son if on half term from sixth form college, so at least we don't have to go out to drop him off or pick him up tomorrow. That will give us the whole day if the weather is good. We will just have to wait and see.

So that is it for now Speak to you all soon.

Oh I have enabled the comments part of my blog and you will be able to leave comments now. So why don't you let me know what you think of the restoration so far.
Debbie

Day 49 and Day 50 ( 10th and 15th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 49

We borrowed the money from our son today to go and get some new brake drums. It is a good thing he had a little bit of money from College that was left in the bank. If we hadn't borrowed from him we would still be waiting for the refund and there would be no brake drums on the car. I am so glad that he didn't spend his bursary from College LOL. But he is good like that LOL

Anyway, we went to Overlandrs in Liverpool for the new brake drums. Guess what, they are right and they fit properly. They also adjusted properly too. YIPPEEEEEEEEEE.

So they are now on the car and they brakes have been adjusted. So here are the long awaited photos of the brake drums on.

Drivers side (right) front

Drivers side (right) rear
Passenger side (left) rear

Passengers side (left) front

Don't they look so pretty. LOL What a pain it has been trying to get the brakes sorted. I cant believe that '*addocks' have the drums made to the maximum machine diameter and expect them to fit or work. There must be loads of vehicles out there that have these on that had been made to fit and work. I know I would not want to be driving any of them. But at least now we have the right drums on 'Jane-May' and she will stop when I put my foot on the brake pedal.

The weather had been rain then dry all day, so this was all we were able to get done today. Look at day 50 below to find out what we did next.
Debbie

Day 50

We are really starting to get the work done now and 'Jane-May' is starting to take shape. It is a pity that the weather is against us again. Yet another day of rain, then shine. I wish it would make its mind up on what it is going to do. LOL

The only stuff we got done today what the vents are on now and the front of the car really looks how she should do. But I will leave that up to you to decide. I know there are no wings or bonnet (hood) on yet, but you get the idea of what she should look like. LOL

I think she is looking really good now. It is amazing the difference a couple of parts being put on make. The rubber seals for the vents were also purchased from Overlandrs in Liverpool. I wish we had gone to him in the first place for the drums. We would be so much further than we are now if we had done. But as they say, 'You live and learn'.

That is all for now. I do hate this weather. I just wish it would be dry so that we can get more done to my 'Jane-May'
Debbie

Day 47 and Day 48 ( 5th and 6th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 47

While we are waiting for the refund from '*addocks', we are getting a couple of other bits done. The exhaust is here and we are fitting that and doing the last little bits for the brake system. Like fitting the last of the brake hoses and stuff.

The exhaust thankfully is the right one. It was not that expensive so we bought a whole exhaust system. So Paul got to work fitting the exhaust. It looks really good.

Rear view of the exhaust

Side view of exhaust

Back box of exhaust

It is nice to have a shiny new exhaust system on 'Jane-May'. This means we are a little bit closer to the end of the stuff we have to buy to complete the restoration. Yippee

The final p-clips for the brake lines had been fitted and the last of the brake hoses are on now too. We have been busy with the black paint too LOL. The pedals have been painted and so have the air vent pipes for the heater. They look so much better now that they are black and they don't look so old now. LOL
Nice black pedals

Heater pipe vents

You can also see on this photo that the steering column has also been painted black again. As have the outer parts of the clocks.

Shiny black bits on the engine

This makes everything look so much better

As you can see, there are a few bits that have now been painted black. It just tidies everything up and makes it all look so much better. Don't you think?

Day 48

The weather is such a pain just now. It is wet in the morning and then dry in the afternoon, or the other way around. So we are working in between showers. That is the problem with the good old British weather. You never know what it is going to do. But back to the restoration

The last of the bits for the exhaust are now done. The brackets for the exhaust mountings have been done and the exhaust is now in place properly. There has been some more painting, this time silver. I think the engine is looking really good now, with some newly painted silver bits. LOL

Rear Box

Nice new bracket and exhaust fitted on Near side (left)

Another new bracket on the Drivers side (right) and the exhaust is in place properly now

These photos show that the exhaust is all fitted and looking really good on 'Jane-May'

Now for the nice shiny silver bits LOL.

Had to put our initials on the chassis. These are mine

Newly painted silver bits on the engine

The vent controls (that open the vents) have now been painted silver

Pauls initials on the chassis

It is amazing how much time the little things take to do. Paul said I was a big kid painting our initials on the chassis. I said that we had to leave our mark on 'Jane-May'. He said doing the restoration was leaving our mark. I didn't agree LOL

Well that is it for days 47 and 48. I still have days 49, 50, 51 and 52 to update you with yet. So I will get to work on them now LOL

Oh, we are still waiting for the refund for the brake drums from '*addocks', they take the money quick enough, but have been messing us around with the refund. I will tell more on Day 49
Debbie
