The continuation of the budget restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Hi everyone

I did say that it would not be a day by day account of the restoration, so here is what has been done up to date.

The sill brackets have been fitted as have the wing brackets. The valance has also been fitted to the front of the car and really make is look good. I cant believe how far we have come and that we are getting so close to finishing.

All the door seals have been fitted, the doors are a little stiff since they were fitted, but at least they are now on.

We decided to fit the mud shields and they were a bit of a pain to fit. We had made a mistake with the new wings and got Series 3 wings. The mud shields were for the Series 2. So they didn't fit properly. We had to make some brackets to make them fit LOL. We really didn't realise that the wings were not Series 2 wings but Series 3. Oh well, at least we were able to make them fit with the brackets that we had made.

The washer jet is now on and that was the usual pain to fit, but we got it done.

The reflectors are on and so it the lovely new Reg Plate.

You didn't think I was going to let you see what my reg is did you LOL.

Most of the other stuff that has been done, you cant take a photo to show them. So I am only showing you what I can take a photo of.

The new valance is not on and makes Jane-May look whole again.

New washer jet is fitted. At lease now the water will get the screen and not the roof LOL

Well that is it for now. There is still a good few bits to do, but we are getting closer to being able to book the MOT. We have ordered the new VIN Plate and that has been posted out to me. So we are just waiting for that to arrive. When I have it in my hand I will book the MOT. So watch this space.

Day 62 (1st December 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 62

Well, there is nothing that we were able to do today. The weather is against us and there is nothing we can do in the rain.

The one thing you will notice is, on the photo for the blog, the picture has now changed.

Well, lets hope the weather is better tomorrow and we get loads more stuff done. Also lets hope we are allowed to have the new VIN plate and that it doesn't take too long for it to arrive. I will keep you posted.

Day 61 (30th November 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 61


Well, the floor plates are all secured down now. Plus we got the mud shields on and the steering box cover is in place now also.

There was not enough room to get the camera in to take photos of these. But I do have photos of the floor plates all secure in place now.

We have also got the heater secured in place too. This is one of those jobs that is not easy to get at the nuts and bolts that fix it in. But there is always something like that on a Series LOL

As you can see all the rubbers on the gear stick, the handbrake and the high and low ratio selector are all in place now too.

Well that is it for now. We were going to get some more done today (1st December 2013) but the weather again is against us.

We did have a little set back. The VIN plate has gone. Neither of us remember where we last saw it. Oh I hate losing stuff, especially when it is something as important and the VIN plate. We have asked the Series 2 Club for a new one. We had to prove that the vehicle is mine and the VIN number. I also told them about Avril coming and getting the relevant numbers off the Series 2 and we have placed an order for a new VIN plate. We are just waiting for that to be made and sent out. Without the VIN plate, we cant take her for the MOT. So I am praying now that we are allowed to have the new VIN plate sent out to us. So please, please, please, keep your fingers crossed that we are able to have a new one made.

I will let you know how we get on with the VIN plate and what other bits we get done. I just wish the weather would be kind to us for a change.

This is the list of what is still to be done.
1. Fit new registration number plates
2. Fit all the door seals
3. Fit new VIN plate
4. pre MOT check and adjustments
5. Front valance to be fitted
6. Bench seats need to be fitted.
7. Rear tub needs to have a quick coat of paint too. (rain got to it and it has messed up the paint Grrrr)
plus there are a couple of touch ups that need to be done on the paint work. There is always something to be done LOL

Day 60 (26th Novemeber 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 60

The chains are on the tailgate and the sills have been put on. I do think 'Jane-May' is really looking good. I think everything is really starting to come together now.

She is really looking like a looked after Series 2. I am getting really excited about driving her again. Mind you, driving her is an experience in itself. LOL You really do have to think about what you are doing all the time. But the greatest driving experience I have ever had. Just wish we could take her for the MOT now. LOL

We went to the Series 2 Owners Club pub meeting on 16th November 2013. It was a great time and we saw some great vehicles. One of them wasn't a Series 2, but it was a great talking point. You will see by the photos.

I know this isn't a Series 2, but I think it is great. I would love to have a go. LOL

These are the other vehicles that were at the pub meeting. Some of us were not able to come in our Series 2's. I do hope I will be able to go in 'Jane-May' in the new year.

Day 59 (15th Novemeber 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 59

The floor plates have been put in place and the inside is nearly finished.

Still a good few bits to be done and a little bit more time before we can book the MOT, but we are getting there, slowly LOL

Day 58 (13th Novemeber 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 58

The seat box went in today. Yippee. She is really starting to look as she should do. The box did need a little tweaking, but we got there in the end. Now just the seats to fit.

We just need to get the floor plates in and they that will be the inside finished. It has been so long since we last saw the seat box it, I had forgotten how cool she looked. Well, not that the horrible colour she used to be was cool. It wasn't LOL. But you get what I mean.

Rain stopped play again. That seems to be the one thing that stops us from getting any further.

Day 57 (7th Novemeber 2013) of the restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 57

All the wiring for the lights has been done and the lights are all now fitted.

The head lights, indicators and side lights are now all fitted. I think 'Jane-May' is looking really good. We still have loads of little bits to do, but we are getting there. I keep hearing, 'should be ready in about a week for the MOT' LOL. But something always happens or the weather is against us. So it is yet again 'should be about a week' LOL

Day 56 ( 6th November 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 56

Well the new clutch has arrived and it is ready to fit.

These are the photos of the new clutch. We were lucky enough to be able to go to a Land Rover Supplier and get the clutch. It was something that they have on stock. So Paul set about fitting the new clutch.

As you may have noticed during the restoration of my Series 2, nothing goes to plan. Well it was the same for the clutch. It was fitted and was working. Yes was working. Paul had engaged the clutch a couple of times to make sure everything was okay and then suddenly the pedal hit the floor and the clutch would not disengage. We had to phone the LR Supplier and tell them what had happened. They said they would get another one for us and it would be there the following afternoon. So yet again we have a set back.

We went to LR Supplier the following day and they guys in there, well how can I put this. One of them thought we were thick and that we didn't know how to fit a clutch. He then got a large screwdriver and started to depress each of the fingers on the clutch. Because each one would go down without sticking, he said the clutch was fine. What an idiot. The fingers don't go down one at a time, the 3 of them go down together. You could see on the housing that there was scoring where the fingers had jammed. He kept telling us the clutch was fine. I told him that it wasn't and that we had been told we could have a replacement and that was what I wanted. One of the other guys said that he was happy to replace the clutch. We were there for a good 45 minutes before we were given the replacement clutch. The bit that really worried me was that the first guy said he could sell on the clutch that we had returned. So some poor person is going to be sold a clutch that sticks and doesn't work. I do hope no-one goes in and buys it.

Anyway, we fitted the replacement clutch and it is working properly. Yippee

Now we have all the fiddly bits to do on the Series 2. Fitting the lights, doing all the wiring and getting the little things done. So I don't think it will be a day by day account on the restoration from now on. But I will tell you what we have done and show you any photos that we have taken.

Day 55 ( 27th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 55

Well, the weather is looking a bit okay to do some more work on 'Jane-May' so we got out as soon as we could to get some more done. The weather didn't brighten up until the afternoon, so we were late in getting started.

We still have to fix the drivers (right) side wing in place properly, and the front panel needs to go on. We also need to get the passengers (left) side door on and the passengers (left) side wing in place.

So that is what we did.

We have to bonnet (hood) on, but it is not properly fixed in place. But you get the idea of how much we have done and how she is looking now. Paul also got the pods in place for the front lights. We had to wait for more parts to come, again. But we have all the wiring for her now and the long awaited registration plates. They look really cool. With her being a classic vehicle, we are able to have the old Black and Silver Plates. I have taken the picture from the internet to show you what they are like. This is not the reg that 'Jane-May' has. I am not telling you what that is LOL.

Now don't you think that looks just fantastic. I cant wait to get them on 'Jane-May'.

Anyway, the last thing that we managed to get on was the tailgate. Now most of the body work is on. The only thing she is missing is the floor and the seat box. We are not putting them in yet. Paul wants to check the clutch is working okay before the floor and seat box goes in. He doesn't want to have to take it all out again if we have to replace the clutch plate.

Here is a couple of pictures of the rear of 'Jane-May' with her tailgate on.

Paul made sure the canvas was on properly as we are in for a storm. We don't want anything to happen to the canvas with the winds that are expected. They say we could have winds up to 90mph. So it is a good thing we have the main body work on now. That way nothing would get blown around the garden. That is the last thing I want. All that hard work that has been put into 'Jane-May' with the painting and everything else. Lets hope the storm misses us and we will not have any of the winds or the rain they have forecast.

Not long now I think, before we are taking 'Jane-May' for her MOT. I am really getting excited now.

Day 54 ( 24th October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

Day 54

Well the sun was shinning beautifully today and we got loads of work done to 'Jane-May'. She is really taking shape now and even looks like a Series 2 Land Rover LOL.

This is what we got done today.

We fixed all the hood sticks in place for the canvas roof.

As you can also see from the photos we got the drivers (right) side door fitted. The door was a bit of a pain to get fitted and it had to have a bit of jigging to get it to close properly. But we got there in the end. I think everything is starting to come together nicely now. The is a little bracket that goes between the top corner of the windscreen and the side panel just above the door. Well, the bracket that was on 'Jane-May' was the wrong one. There's a surprise, not. So now we have to make a bracket that will fit. This one doesn't do anything like it should do, so it is going to have to be made. I think Paul and Christopher are getting used to having to make stuff for the car LOL.

Anyway, here is a better photo showing the drivers (right) door. Really taking shape.

You can see that Paul is fixing the bulkhead back after having to move it a little to get the door to close.

It is amazing how much time fitting the door could take up. But at least it is fitted now and the canvas roof can go on

We had a bit of a pain putting the roof back on LOL. We had to have a look at a couple of pictures of canvas roofed Series 2's to remember how the roof went back on. It has been a long time since the canvas was on LOL

But I do think she looks really good with the roof on now. But I will let you be the judge of that LOL

Now all she needs is a couple of wings and she will be nearly there. We were only able to get one wing on just before we lost all the light.

Unfortunately Paul got the tarpaulin on before I could get the photo taken. But I think you get the idea. It is dark now so we will not be able to get anything else done. So look to see what is next to be fitted on 'Jane-May'.
