Day 45 and 46 (29th September 2013 and 2nd October 2013) of my Budget Restoration of my Series 2 Land Rover

I know it has been a while since I updated you on the restoration of my Sereis 2, so I will do a couple of days at a time

Day 45

Well we have been really busy again working on my 'Jane-May'. The brake drums have arrived and Paul is all set to get them fitted and to adjust them all up. He has put the drums on the wheel hubs just to check that they are the right size.

There are a couple of different brake drums. One is brake drum-88in Series 2 and 2A Front and Rear (these will fit), another is Brake drum-10in 88in Series 3 and Def 90 (which will not fit) and the last is Brake drum -11in-SWB front from 80/81, LWB Front 4Cyl,S3 LWB Rear, 110 Rear (these will not fit either).

So we had ordered the right ones, 88in Series 2/2A Front and Rear and put them on the car. We had to wait for a week for them to arrive, but they are here now. Paul got all his tools ready and the snail cams to adjust the brakes and started to adjust them. Well you just know something is wrong don't you. They just don't adjust at all. The snail cams just spun and would not do anything at all. There was no way that they would adjust and so this made Paul really angry and didn't understand why.

We bought them from a good specialist supplier, so we thought (*addocks) and thought they would work. But they didn't. So Paul got on the phone and asked them to send some new snail cams. Well, the supplier would not send us the set of 4 that we needed and only sent one set for us to see if that would work. If it did they would send us the other 3.

Paul was not a happy bunny. I think it is disgraceful that when someone hears your accent, they automatically think you are trying to con them. If I had been on the phone, I would have told them what I thought of them. We have got a lot of parts from them for the restoration and they could see that we had spent a good bit of money with them. But no, because of our accent, they just thought we were trying to con them.

Paul agreed to have the 1 set of snail cams sent, not much more he could do really. So we would have to wait for it to arrive. Luckily it only took a day for them to arrive.

In the meantime, Paul put the drums on to check that they fitted. That was all he could do as the snail cams were no good.

This is what the car should look like with the drums on. We can only get an idea of it until the new snail cam arrives.

Now it is just a waiting game. So until we get the new snail cam to try, that is all we can do for now. So I will speak to you all when it arrives.

Well the 1 set of snail cams they sent us arrived and as usual the weather was against us again. So we will have to see it if brightens up. It did and Paul set to work fitting them. Again they would not adjust. He spent hours trying to get them to work and nothing. He checked everything and nothing would get them to adjust.

He rang a couple of Land Rover Specialists and checked with them that the cams should lock out before you bring them back a couple of clicks. They all said they did. One company said that they had bought the drums from '*addocks' and they had to put a metal sleeve on the adjuster pin on the brake shoe to get them to adjust. This is not what you really want to do as it really isn't right.

So again he got on the phone to '*addocks', they told him that they had not had a problem with them before and that he should be able to fit them no problem. So Paul then waited for our son to come home and the two of them inspected the cams and the brake drums.

Well, they found that it is the drums that are the problem. On the drum it has stamped on it that the maximum diameter should be not more than 255.5mm. You guessed it, the drums were already machined to 255.5mm. So he had to wait for the next day to ring '*addocks' back and tell them that the drums had been machined wrong.

Here is a picture of the measurements of the drums

This shows the stamped maximum machining

So we rang *addocks again and told them that they were all machined to the maximum. They said again that they had not had any problems with them. They asked us to send them an email showing the measurements of the drums. Yet another company that wants us to prove we are not trying to do them. I am getting really fed up of people treating us this way.

Paul asked for the drums to be replaced with a different make of drum. Guess what, they advertise that they do other makes, but they only supply these drums. Plus, they have these drums made for them, so they are their own make. Paul was really fed up by this stage. So we said we wanted a refund and that we would return the drums to them. They arranged for them to be picked up that afternoon. Amazing how they could have them picked up on the same day as the phone call, but it takes a week for them to get to us in the first place.

They said once they had the drums back, they would refund us the money, £69.60. So we have to wait for the refund now to order the next set of drums. I don't think I will be using '*addocks' ever again for any parts. They are not helpful and never believe anything you say.

So now we wait for the refund. Lets hope they are quicker at doing that than they are in sending your order out. So watch this space.

Debbie
